Syrian Christian volunteers mobilize to defend community amid growing uncertainty

The Christian community in Syria is facing a critical situation as violent attacks and killings continue under the Islamist rule of the new regime led by Ahmed al-Sharaa. Jeff King, the president of International Christian Concern, has expressed concern, stating that Syrian Christians are teetering on the edge of catastrophe.

In response to the escalating violence, a group of Syrian Christians in Damascus, known as the Eagles of Antioch, has come together to defend their communities and religious identity. The group, consisting of around 500 volunteers, patrols Christian neighborhoods in the city, protecting shrines and churches from attack.

The Eagles of Antioch, named after the ancient city of Antioch, represent three main Christian denominations – Antiochian Greek Orthodox, Antiochian Melkite Catholics, and Antiochian Syriac Orthodox. They work to maintain security and harmony within their communities, repairing damaged sites and preventing crimes.

Danial Georgios, a member of the Eagles of Antioch, emphasized the group’s desire for equal rights and representation in Syrian society. They aim to fill the security gap in their neighborhoods until tensions ease, advocating for strong municipalities to empower Christians across Syria.

Despite the challenges faced by Syrian Christians, Georgios believes that the Eagles of Antioch can work in coordination with the HTS government to protect their communities without challenging the sovereignty of Syria. The group has been proactive in responding to attacks and incidents targeting Christians, organizing peaceful protests and advocating for their rights.

While HTS has promised not to target religious minorities, concerns remain about the safety of Syrian Christians under the new regime. International Christian Concern has warned of a potential escalation in violence against Christians, urging for continued support and protection for the vulnerable community.

Despite the uncertainties and challenges ahead, the Eagles of Antioch remain committed to defending their communities and preserving their religious identity. Through collaboration with HTS officials and proactive measures, they strive to ensure the safety and well-being of Syrian Christians in the face of growing threats.
