Poland launches air defenses after Russia fires long-range missiles

Poland, a NATO ally, took action on Tuesday by deploying military aviation to its skies in response to recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian towns near the western borders of the war-torn nation. Warsaw’s Operational Command confirmed that Polish airspace was not violated during the attacks and that the long-range Russian strikes had ceased by Tuesday afternoon.

This recent incident is part of a pattern of Russian aggression towards Ukraine, including brutal aerial bombardments and long-range strikes. Just one day before the attacks, a U.S. nuclear-capable B-52 bomber flew from the U.K. to Estonia before circling back through Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland – all countries that border Russia, Ukraine, or both.

The Polish F-16 jet fighters were mobilized in response to the escalating situation, with the country remaining vigilant to ensure the security of its airspace. In addition to military action, Poland also pledged an additional $210 million in military aid to Ukraine, bringing their total support to roughly $4 billion since the invasion began.

Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the aid package would include training for Ukrainian troops, with Poland having already trained about 28,000 soldiers out of the 80-90,000 trained by EU countries. The commitment to supporting Ukraine was further demonstrated as Western leaders and allied nations gathered in Kyiv for a summit in solidarity with Ukraine on the anniversary of the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the support from over 40 nations, including new aid packages consisting of weapons, air defense systems, financial assistance, and investments in defense production. However, the absence of the American flag at the summit highlighted the strained relationship between Kyiv and Washington since the Trump administration took office.

Despite the challenges, Zelenskyy emphasized the unity and unwavering support for Ukraine, stating that together they are working towards restoring true peace in the region. The international community, including Poland, remains committed to standing with Ukraine and its people during this critical time.
