Concordia alum Emmy Fecteau looks to make mark in PWHL as 1st U Sports draftee

Emmy Fecteau: From U Sports Champion to PWHL Pioneer

Emmy Fecteau had a remarkable career at Concordia University, where she led the Stingers to two U Sports women’s hockey championships in her final three seasons. Her success on the ice caught the attention of the New York Sirens, who made history by drafting her as the first PWHL player straight out of U Sports.

The Sirens, who finished last in the PWHL’s inaugural season, are hoping that Fecteau’s winning mentality will help turn their fortunes around. Fecteau, a 25-year-old native of Saint-Odilon-de-Cranbourne, Que., was a force to be reckoned with during her time at Concordia, tallying 89 points in 83 career U Sports games and stepping up in the playoffs with 26 points in 18 post-season appearances.

As Fecteau transitions to the PWHL, she is eager to bring her physical style of play to the ice. In university hockey, there were restrictions on hitting, but in the PWHL, she looks forward to unleashing her full potential. Fecteau’s playoff performance at Concordia, where she recorded four goals and nine assists in just six RSEQ playoff games, bodes well for her future in the PWHL.

When Fecteau first started her university career in 2019, the PWHL wasn’t even on her radar. Education was her top priority, and she chose U Sports to ensure that her academic achievements would be recognized in her future career. Now, as she embarks on her professional hockey journey, Fecteau stands as a testament to the talent and opportunities available in Canadian women’s hockey.

At Concordia, Fecteau had the privilege of being coached by hockey legends Julie Chu and Caroline Ouellette. Their mentorship and emphasis on teamwork and personal growth were instrumental in shaping Fecteau into the player and leader she is today. Ouellette praised Fecteau’s leadership and versatility on the ice, highlighting her as a player who embodies the team-first mentality.

As Fecteau begins her rookie season with the Sirens, she carries with her the lessons of “trusting the process” instilled by Chu and Ouellette. The transition to the PWHL has presented new challenges, particularly in the level of competition and speed of play. Fecteau is focused on adapting to the demands of professional hockey and making a positive impact on her team.

Looking ahead, Fecteau’s ultimate goal is personal growth and development, both on and off the ice. While the prospect of representing Team Canada at the 2026 Olympics is enticing, she remains grounded and committed to taking things one step at a time. With her determination, skill, and winning mindset, Emmy Fecteau is poised to make a lasting impression in the PWHL and beyond.
