Jude Law canalize Putin in the wizard of the Kremlin at Film Festival of Venice

Jude Law Stars as Vladimir Putin in Olivier Assayas’ “The Wizard of the Kremlin”

Jude Law’s transformation into Vladimir Putin for Olivier Assayas’ film “The Wizard of the Kremlin” made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday.

Law, speaking before the premiere, expressed confidence in the project and stated that he was not afraid of any potential consequences for his portrayal of the Russian president.

“I felt safe in the hands of Olivier,” Law said. “This is a story that will be told with intelligence, nuance, and consideration. We were not seeking controversy for the sake of controversy.”

The film, based on the bestselling book by Giuliano da Empoli, follows the rise of Putin and a fictional advisor named Vadim Baranov, played by Paul Dano. Set in the early 1990s during the post-Soviet chaos, the story spans until 2014.

Dano’s character is inspired by real-life political strategist Vladislav Surkov, known for his role in creating Putin’s tightly controlled political system. The film delves into Dano’s own political maneuvering and the world he helped shape.

“The Wizard of the Kremlin” is expected to spark conversations given the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Director Assayas described the film as a reflection on modern politics and the methods that hold society hostage.

The production took place in Latvia due to filming restrictions in Russia. Despite challenges, the film is a timely exploration of power, politics, and the impact of totalitarianism on society.

Alicia Vikander co-stars in the film as Vadim Baranov’s girlfriend, embodying the theme of freedom in a male-dominated political world. The film’s themes resonate with current events and offer a thought-provoking look at the complexities of power dynamics.

While a North American release date is pending, actor Jeffrey Wright, who plays a journalist in the film, emphasizes the importance of viewing “The Wizard of the Kremlin” in today’s political climate.

As audiences await the film’s release, its exploration of power, politics, and morality promises to spark meaningful discussions about the state of modern society and the consequences of unchecked authority.
