The Supreme Court has given the green light for the Trump administration to proceed with immigration raids in California, despite objections from local leaders and advocacy groups. These raids were challenged on the grounds that federal authorities were targeting suspected illegal immigrants without valid cause.

In a 6-3 decision along ideological lines, the high court’s ruling allows the administration to continue with the raids while the case is pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

A federal judge had previously blocked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from carrying out raids in Los Angeles County, citing potential violations of the Fourth Amendment. The Ninth Circuit upheld this order, prompting the Trump administration to seek relief from the Supreme Court.

In her dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor expressed concern over the emergency order allowing the raids to proceed without a clear explanation from the majority. She criticized the move as potentially unconstitutional, stating, “We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low-wage job.”
