Alberta's fourth addiction recovery community opens in Calgary

The opening of a new addiction recovery community in Calgary’s southeast marks a significant milestone in Alberta’s efforts to combat addiction and support those in need. Premier Danielle Smith, flanked by officials, cut the ribbon to officially open the facility operated by Last Door Recovery Society.

This new facility adds 74 beds to the province’s capacity and is part of a $350-million plan to build 11 facilities by 2027, with a focus on providing same-day access to addiction treatment and eliminating user fees. The goal is to help up to 300 individuals per year in their journey towards recovery.

According to Rick Wilson, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction, residents of the facility will receive comprehensive, evidence-based treatment including therapy, employment training, and other support services. The province has invested over $9 million in upgrading the site to ensure a high standard of care.

While some have raised concerns about the province’s shift away from harm reduction services, experts like Dr. Monty Ghosh and Christina Tortorelli emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach to addiction recovery. Ghosh highlights the need for publicly funded treatment spaces and psychosocial support, while Tortorelli stresses the importance of access to resources and services for individuals struggling with addiction.

The decline in opioid-related deaths in Alberta is a positive sign, but Ghosh warns that the crisis is still severe in certain areas, such as Edmonton. He emphasizes the need for tailored approaches to address the varying needs of different populations.

Tortorelli points out that recovery is a complex and lifelong process, and calls for a focus on providing services to youth populations struggling with addiction. While the new treatment beds are a step in the right direction, she urges policymakers to consider the specific needs of different demographic groups.
