Virginia woman arrested after impersonating a nurse and working at California hospitals: police

A Virginia woman has been arrested after allegedly posing as a nurse and treating patients at several Southern California hospitals, according to Burbank police. Amanda Leeann Porter, 44, was found to be impersonating a real registered nurse from out-of-state and working at Los Angeles County hospitals without a valid license.

The investigation began in May 2024 when Burbank police received a report about a woman pretending to be a registered nurse at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. Over the course of several months, detectives identified the woman as Porter, who had applied for and secured a nursing position at the medical center.

During her time at Saint Joseph Medical Center, Porter oversaw around 60 patients from April 8 to May 8. It was discovered that she had been fraudulently employed and had received two paychecks before being terminated. Porter does not possess a nursing license and is currently on federal probation for a fraud violation in Virginia.

Further investigations revealed that Porter had obtained employment at various LA-area hospitals using false identities. The Burbank Police Department suspects that she may have committed similar offenses in the Southern California area over the past year.

On November 7, Porter was arrested by Burbank police in connection with an arrest warrant after being released from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department custody for a similar violation at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita. She is facing charges of identity theft, false impersonation, and grand theft and is currently being held without bail after her arraignment on November 13.

Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center acknowledged the investigation and issued a statement regarding Porter’s arrest. The hospital terminated her employment as soon as her falsified nursing credentials were discovered and notified the relevant authorities and patients under her care.

The Burbank Police Department is urging anyone with additional information about Porter or the case to contact their office at 818-238-3210. Fox News Digital reached out to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

In conclusion, it is crucial to ensure the authenticity of medical professionals to guarantee the safety and well-being of patients. Impersonating a nurse poses serious risks and legal consequences, as demonstrated in the case of Amanda Porter.
