Germany, experts urge Trump to reconsider withdrawing U.S. from World Health Organization
Germany has expressed its concern over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), stating that it could severely weaken global health security and hinder progress in combatting infectious diseases like AIDS and malaria. German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach emphasized the importance of persuading Trump to reconsider his decision in order to maintain international collaboration in addressing health crises.
Experts have also warned that a U.S. withdrawal from the WHO could undermine the world’s ability to respond to future pandemics. Trump’s initial announcement to pull out of the Geneva-based UN health body in July 2020, following the declaration of COVID-19 as a global public health emergency, was later reversed by President Joe Biden in January 2021.
The rationale behind Trump’s decision to withdraw from the WHO was based on claims that the organization had failed to act independently and relied heavily on disproportionate financial contributions from the U.S. compared to other countries, particularly China. The U.S. withdrawal from the WHO, which requires approval from Congress, could jeopardize vital programs within the organization, including efforts to combat tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other health emergencies. The U.S. is the largest financial contributor to the WHO, accounting for approximately 18% of its funding. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Germany are among the other significant donors to the organization.
