Tage Thompson OT hero for U.S. at hockey worlds after it blew 4-goal lead against Norway

The United States secured a thrilling 6-5 victory over Norway in a rollercoaster of a game at the hockey world championship in Herning, Denmark. Tage Thompson stole the show with a hat trick, including the game-winning power-play goal in overtime, to seal the win for the Americans after they squandered a four-goal lead.

Norway fought back valiantly, with defenceman Stian Solberg also netting a hat trick, including the equalizer with just 1:27 left in regulation to force the extra period. However, it was Thompson who had the final say, completing his hat trick with a clutch goal just over four minutes into overtime.

Captain Clayton Keller led the way for the Americans with a goal and two assists, while Cutter Gauthier and Michael McCarron also found the back of the net. Gauthier’s early goal put the U.S. ahead before Keller’s strike doubled their lead in the first period.

Gauthier’s goal sees him tied at the top of the goal scoring table with Canada’s Bo Horvat, both with four goals to their name. Solberg managed to reduce the deficit for Norway on the power play before Thompson and McCarron restored the U.S.’s comfortable lead.

Thompson added his second goal early in the second period to make it 5-1 in favor of the Americans. However, Norway continued to push back, with Solberg scoring his second power-play goal of the game and Martin Ronnild adding another to make it a one-goal game heading into the final frame.

Norway completed their comeback in the third period, with Noah Steen and Solberg scoring to tie the game at 5-5. The Americans were able to hold on and secure the win in overtime, thanks to Thompson’s heroics.
