Taiwan envoy warns of China’s ‘existential threat’ in meeting with House GOP

Taiwan’s top envoy to the U.S. is pushing for closer ties between the two countries, urging the Senate to ease tax burdens and fast-track foreign military sales. Ambassador Alexander Tah-Ray Yui emphasized the urgent need to address China’s threat and expedite the delivery of weapons to Taiwan.

Yui highlighted the importance of advancing a double taxation agreement to encourage investment between Taiwan and the U.S. The House has already passed legislation to prevent double taxation on cross-border investments, but the Senate needs to follow suit for this to become a reality.

The ambassador expressed concern over China’s aggressive actions in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region. He noted the increasing presence of the People’s Liberation Army and Navy around Taiwan, posing a constant threat to the island nation.

Rep. August Pfluger echoed these concerns, emphasizing the stark differences between Taiwan’s democratic values and China’s authoritarian regime. He stressed the importance of standing in solidarity with Taiwan against China’s oppressive policies.

As tensions rise in the region, the U.S. and Taiwan are bolstering their military readiness. Taiwan has committed to increasing defense spending, while the U.S. is reinforcing its Navy, Air, and Space Forces to counter China’s expansionist ambitions.

Military officials have warned that China is preparing for conflict in the Indo-Pacific, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth describing it as a strategy to dominate the region. Gen. Dan Caine added that China’s aggressive maneuvers are rehearsals for a forced unification with Taiwan.

Taiwan has taken steps to root out Chinese spies within its ranks, indicting individuals suspected of spying for China. The recent sighting of two Chinese aircraft carriers conducting operations in the Pacific further underscores China’s expansionist goals.

In the face of these threats, the U.S. Congress is sending a clear message of support to the Taiwanese people. As allies and partners, the U.S. stands with Taiwan in the face of tyranny and aggression from China.
