Tajon Buchanan’s brace lifts Canada to 6-0 Gold Cup win over Honduras

Niko Sigur scored his first goal for Canada in a dominating 6-0 victory against Honduras at B.C. Place in Vancouver to kick off their Gold Cup campaign. The 21-year-old rightback/midfielder from Burnaby, B.C., opened the scoring in the 27th minute, setting the tone for a well-rounded offensive performance by the 30th-ranked Canadians.
Tani Oluwaseyi added a goal just before halftime, while Tajon Buchanan scored a brace with goals in the 48th and 65th minutes. Substitute Promise David and Nathan Saliba also found the back of the net to secure the win. Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair was solid in goal, stopping all four shots on target from No. 75 Honduras.
Canada’s assistant coach, Mauro Biello, praised the team’s collective effort, emphasizing that every player performed at a high level. Despite head coach Jesse Marsch sitting out due to a suspension, the team remained focused and executed their game plan effectively.
Sigur, who plays for Hajduk Split in Croatia’s first division, expressed his joy at scoring his first goal for the senior national team in front of friends and family at B.C. Place. With the World Cup on the horizon, Sigur highlighted the importance of continuing to work hard and improve as a team.
The offensive onslaught continued in the second half, with Buchanan showcasing his talent with two well-taken goals. Oluwaseyi and David also made significant contributions to the team’s impressive performance.
Canada’s captain for the tournament, Jonathan David, emphasized the team’s focus on being more ruthless in front of goal, a mentality that has paid off so far in the tournament. The team will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming matches against Curacao and El Salvador.
With the knockout stage looming, Canada will aim to build on their strong start and make a deep run in the tournament. As former champions of the Gold Cup, the Canadians are determined to add another title to their collection and showcase their talent on the international stage.
