Teary-eyed Venus Williams cuts press conference short after early US Open exit

Venus Williams Opens Up About Emotional Return to U.S. Open

Venus Williams, a two-time U.S. Open singles champion, made a heartfelt return to the tennis court at this year’s Grand Slam event. After being eliminated in the first round by 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, Williams became visibly emotional during her post-match media session.

The 45-year-old tennis star reflected on the challenges she faced during her road back to the sport, fighting back tears as she spoke about her journey to play more healthy.

“When you play unhealthy, it’s in your mind, it’s not just how you feel — you get stuck in your mind, too,” Williams shared. “So, um, it was nice to be freer.”

Despite her loss, Williams expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she received from the crowd and fans worldwide. She acknowledged the bright lights and the unwavering encouragement she felt from spectators throughout the match.

“The lights are very bright out there,” Williams said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a crowd that much on my side. When I lost those first two games, they were just still right there with me every point.”

After a year away from competition due to health setbacks, including surgery for uterine fibroids and a misdiagnosis, Williams returned to the court in July at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. She became the second-oldest woman on record to win a tour-level singles title, joking that she fought to return for health insurance coverage.

“I had to come back for the insurance because they informed me earlier this year I’m on COBRA,” Williams humorously shared. “So I was like, ‘I got to get my benefits on.'”
