Technical issues with MV Confederation cited as reason for cancelling N.S.-P.E.I. crossings Monday

The Prince Edward Island-Nova Scotia Ferry Service Faces Disruptions Again
The ferry service between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia experienced disruptions once again on Monday, causing inconvenience for travelers.
Northumberland Ferries Ltd. had to cancel several crossings, including the 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 11:45 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. sailings from both Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S.
The company explained in a notice on its website that the cancellations were due to “ongoing technical issues aboard MV Confederation.”
Last week, the ferry service also faced disruptions when multiple sailings had to be cancelled because of “unusually low tides” in the Northumberland Strait.
During this time of the year, Northumberland Ferries Ltd. usually operates eight crossings per day, utilizing both MV Confederation and MV Northumberland.
This season marks the debut of MV Northumberland, previously known as MV Fanafjord, after the federal government purchased the vessel from its Norwegian owner for $43 million in 2023. The acquisition was necessary following the scrapping of the Holiday Island in 2022 due to a fire incident.
With the ferry service facing disruptions, the only alternative for traveling between Prince Edward Island and the mainland by vehicle is the Confederation Bridge, connecting western P.E.I. with New Brunswick.
