US Election 2024

Ted Cruz predicts illegal immigration will ‘plummet’ immediately after Trump’s inauguration

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is confident that illegal immigration will see a significant decrease once President-elect Trump assumes office early next year. During an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation” with host Margaret Brennan, Cruz expressed his belief that the numbers will start to plummet in the weeks following Trump’s inauguration, attributing this decline to Trump’s plan to reinstate the “remain in Mexico” policy.

“I expect we will once again enter into ‘remain in Mexico,’ and we are going to see – I’m going to make a prediction right now: We will see the numbers plummet of illegal immigration coming into this country,” Cruz asserted. “Not in a year, not in six months, but in January and February, because we will have a president who will vigorously enforce the law.”

Cruz also commended Trump’s use of tariffs as leverage to compel Mexico’s government to assist in curbing border traffic. Following a conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump received assurances of cooperation from the Mexican leader.

“I’ll tell you what hasn’t changed is the importance of leverage. And I got to say, you look at the threat of tariffs against Mexico and Canada. [It] immediately has produced action. We’ve seen the president of Mexico stand up and promise that she is going to work hand in hand with the President of the United States, President Trump, to secure the border,” Cruz remarked.

In a surprising turn of events, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trudeau’s visit came shortly after Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian products. The discussions between the two leaders touched on critical issues such as the fentanyl crisis, fair trade deals, and the trade deficit between the U.S. and Canada.

“We discussed many important topics that will require both countries to work together to address, like the fentanyl and drug crisis that has decimated so many lives as a result of illegal immigration, fair trade deals that do not jeopardize American workers and the massive trade deficit the U.S. has with Canada,” Trump shared on Truth Social.

Trump emphasized the need for collaboration to combat the drug epidemic and expressed his determination to protect American citizens from the harmful effects of illicit drugs. Trudeau, in turn, pledged to collaborate with the U.S. to address these pressing issues.

With Trump’s strategic use of tariffs as a bargaining tool to advance his administration’s objectives, it is evident that he is willing to engage both allies and adversaries to achieve his policy goals. The dynamic interactions between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada underscore the complex diplomatic efforts underway to address pressing challenges such as illegal immigration and trade imbalances.

As Sen. Ted Cruz and other political figures continue to navigate the intricate landscape of immigration policy, it remains to be seen how these initiatives will shape the future of border security and international relations. The evolving dynamics of U.S. foreign policy under the Trump administration highlight the importance of strategic decision-making and effective diplomacy in addressing complex global issues.
