Teetering on the brink, Montreal movie theatres seek second act

In Montreal and its surrounding suburbs, a new trend is emerging as old movie theatres on the verge of closure are being revitalized. The focus is on enhancing the overall movie-watching experience by replacing old, uncomfortable seats with plush recliners and upgrading sound and projection systems. These improvements are aimed at making the theatres more appealing and worth the trip for moviegoers.
One such example is the former Guzzo Taschereau theatre in Greenfield Park on Montreal’s South Shore, which has reopened under the Ciné Starz banner. Owner Bruce Gurberg believes that providing the right experience can attract people to unwind and enjoy a movie. This revitalization is part of a larger movement to revive local cinemas, driven by both community interest and passionate individuals who value the in-person movie experience.
Montreal has a rich history of cinema, with many once-popular theatres now closed, such as the Seville Theatre or Cinema V. Despite challenges, some theatres like Cinéma Beaubien and Cinéma Moderne are thriving, offering curated programming and intimate settings that continue to attract audiences. Cinéma du Parc, which received a generous donation from filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, underwent a major renovation in 2023, leading to increased attendance and revenue.
While streaming services have become popular for entertainment, there is still a demand for physical movie theatres. According to recent data, cinema attendance in Quebec has declined, but critics believe there is a unique social experience that comes with going to the movies. Montreal-based movie critic Justine Smith highlights that people enjoy going on dates or outings with friends and family, despite the cost.
For Roxanne Sayegh, executive director of Cinéma du Parc, the positive feedback from moviegoers reaffirms the value of investing in the future of cinemas. The improvements made to the theatre have resulted in increased ticket sales and concession revenue, demonstrating that there is still a place for traditional movie theatres in the digital age.
In a time where streaming services dominate the entertainment landscape, the resurgence of local cinemas in Montreal is a testament to the enduring appeal of the big screen experience. As theatres continue to evolve and adapt to meet the changing needs of audiences, the magic of the movies lives on in these revitalized spaces.
