Tennessee Gov Bill Lee calls special session on Trump immigration agenda

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has announced that he will be calling a special legislative session to address his school choice bill, along with other key priorities of President-elect Trump’s incoming administration. The special session is set to convene on Monday, Jan. 27, with the main focus being on passing the Education Freedom Act.

In addition to the Education Freedom Act, Governor Lee will introduce a legislative package to address the recovery needs for Hurricane Helene and future natural disasters. The session will also address public safety measures regarding immigration, in preparation for the implementation of the Trump Administration’s policies.

The decision to call for a special session came after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a similar move to coordinate Trump’s planned illegal immigration crackdown in the Sunshine State. Gov. Lee issued a joint statement with other Tennessee officials, emphasizing the importance of acting quickly on pressing legislative priorities.

The statement highlighted the widespread support for empowering parents with school choice in Tennessee, as well as the need for comprehensive relief for areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. The state is looking to partner with affected counties to develop innovative solutions for future natural disasters.

Governor Lee’s new school choice bill, the Education Freedom Act of 2025, aims to provide scholarships for up to 20,000 students to use for tuition, tutoring, technology, and examination expenses. The bill also includes provisions to invest in public schools and teachers, with bonuses for teachers and increased funding for K-12 facilities.

In terms of disaster relief, Governor Lee’s package includes over $450 million in direct relief, with funds allocated to bolster Tennessee’s disaster relief fund, reduce local cost-share burdens, and cover administrative costs. The package also includes provisions for rebuilding Hampton High School in Carter County, which was destroyed in Hurricane Helene.
