Tennessee pastor kidnapped in South Africa amid increased armed robberies

The recent kidnapping of Tennessee pastor Joshua Sullivan in South Africa has shed light on the alarming rise in kidnapping incidents in the country over the past decade. Sullivan, a 34-year-old missionary working in Motherwell, was abducted by armed, masked men who broke into his church on April 10 and demanded a ransom for his release.

According to the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) Africa, kidnapping incidents in South Africa have increased by 264% from 2014/15 to 2023/24, with most cases linked to aggravated robberies. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reported a continuous rise in kidnappings, with the latest quarterly crime statistics showing an ongoing increase.

The Hawks, a specialized unit within the South African Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, is actively working to locate Sullivan and apprehend the perpetrators. The suspects demanded a ransom for his release, although it is noted that less than 5% of kidnappings in South Africa involve ransom demands.

Senator Marsha Blackburn has expressed her support for Sullivan’s family and the efforts to rescue him, while acknowledging the challenges faced by missionaries working in countries with high levels of criminal activity. Bobby McDonald, a criminal justice lecturer, highlighted the risks faced by missionaries in areas where gang-related activities are prevalent.

Sullivan’s family and colleagues have described him as a dedicated and compassionate individual with a passion for serving others. His mother, Tonya Morton Rinker, emphasized his selflessness and devotion to his work in South Africa. Missionary Mark Coffey praised Sullivan’s character and commitment to spreading the Gospel among the Xhosa community.
