Texas AG Ken Paxton demands records from special counsel investigation of Trump

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has taken bold action by submitting a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Justice Department under the Biden administration. Paxton is demanding records related to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s corruption investigation into President-elect Trump.

In a statement, Paxton alleged that former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who led the investigation into Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia during the election, had intentionally destroyed records. Paxton expressed concern over the lack of accountability for this action, stating, “It is not clear why nobody was prosecuted for doing so.”

The Texas AG emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the justice system, stating, “This request is part of my Office’s efforts to ensure that Americans are not cheated out of accountability or information again. This pattern of weaponizing the justice system for partisan retribution must end.”

Paxton’s request highlighted the issue of past special counsels intentionally destroying documents during their investigations, raising concerns about potential criminal activity. He warned that any destruction of the requested documents would be considered a crime under federal law and would be referred for prosecution.

The House Judiciary Committee has also expressed concerns about potential record purging by Smith and prosecutors involved in the Trump investigations. Chairman Jim Jordan and Rep. Barry Loudermilk penned a letter to Smith, demanding the production of all relevant documents to Congress before the end of the month.

The DOJ’s decision to wind down federal criminal cases against Trump following his decisive victory in the election reflects a long-standing policy that prevents the prosecution of a sitting president. This decision comes as Trump prepares to be sworn in for a second term in the White House.

Overall, Paxton’s FOIA request and the House Judiciary Committee’s actions underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in government investigations. As the legal proceedings surrounding Trump continue, it is essential to uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is served.
