Texas AG launches probe into Dallas sanctuary policies

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is cracking down on the city of Dallas for its sanctuary city policies that protect illegal immigrants. In a bold move, Paxton has launched an investigation and formally requested records from the city and Dallas Police Department regarding their refusal to comply with state and federal immigration laws.

Paxton stated, “The law is not optional. Local governments must adhere to state and federal immigration laws. The people of Texas expect law enforcement agencies to prioritize public safety, not to implement policies that put our communities at risk.”

The Attorney General’s office has demanded all policies, training materials, and communications related to Dallas’ enforcement or non-enforcement of immigration laws. This includes any documents reflecting decisions to decline cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Dallas Interim Police Chief Michael Igo’s statement that his agency is not assisting federal agencies in detaining individuals, regardless of their immigration status, has raised concerns. Paxton emphasized that this stance may violate Texas law, which prohibits sanctuary city policies that limit immigration enforcement.

In response to the investigation, the city of Dallas stated, “We are reviewing the letter received from the Texas Attorney General’s Office and will respond accordingly.” The Dallas Police Department has not yet commented on the matter.

Texas has been taking a tough stance on illegal immigration, especially under the Biden administration. The state has deployed authorities to the border with Mexico and even initiated a campaign to bus migrants to Democratic-run cities to draw attention to the issue of illegal immigration in the U.S.

It remains to be seen how Dallas will respond to the probe and what actions Paxton’s office will take to ensure compliance with state law.
