That’s a wrap on Canada’s tennis year

The Canadian tennis team faced disappointment in the Davis Cup quarterfinals as they were eliminated by Germany in a 2-0 loss in Spain. The absence of top singles player Felix Auger-Aliassime was felt once again, as Gabriel Diallo and Denis Shapovalov were unable to secure victories for Canada.

Diallo, ranked 86th, fell to No. 88 Daniel Altmaier in straight sets, while Shapovalov, ranked 56th, lost a close match to No. 43 Jan-Lennard Struff. This loss marked the end of Canada’s run in the Davis Cup, coming shortly after the Canadian women’s team was also swept in the quarterfinals of the Billie Jean King Cup.

The 2024 tennis season has been challenging for Canadian players, with only two athletes ranked in the top 50 in singles. Auger-Aliassime, ranked 29th, and Leylah Fernandez, ranked 31st, did not claim any tournament victories this year. Their best result at a Grand Slam was Auger-Aliassime’s fourth-round finish at the French Open.

Despite the tough season finale, Canadian tennis had some bright moments in 2024. At the Olympics in Paris, Auger-Aliassime won a bronze medal in mixed doubles with Gabby Dabrowski, marking Canada’s first Olympic tennis medal since 2000. Dabrowski also had success in doubles, reaching the WTA Finals and winning the event with her partner Erin Routliffe.

In other tennis news, Italy clinched the Billie Jean King Cup title with a victory over Slovakia, while Germany advanced to the Davis Cup semifinals to face the Netherlands. The Davis Cup quarterfinals will continue with matches between the United States and Australia, as well as defending champion Italy against Argentina.
