Cowboys hire Brian Schottenheimer as next head coach

The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant coaching change, announcing that offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will be taking over as the team’s next head coach. This decision comes after the team agreed to part ways with former head coach Mike McCarthy following a disappointing 7-10 season.

Schottenheimer, who has been with the organization since 2022, initially joined as a coaching analyst before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023. In his first year in this role, he oversaw quarterback Dak Prescott’s best season, leading the team to win the NFC East and boasting the fifth-ranked offense in the league.

However, the 2024 season presented challenges for the Cowboys as they finished 16th in total offense after Prescott’s season-ending injury. Despite this setback, Schottenheimer’s work as offensive coordinator was enough to impress Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and secure him the head coaching position.

At 51 years old, Schottenheimer brings nearly three decades of experience as an offensive assistant coach to the table. Prior to joining the Cowboys, he served as an offensive coordinator for the Jets, Rams, and Seahawks. Additionally, Schottenheimer comes from a football family, as his father is the legendary former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, who ranks ninth in NFL history for most wins by a head coach.

The decision to hire Schottenheimer as head coach means the Cowboys missed out on interviewing other potential candidates such as Mike Vrabel, Ben Johnson, and Aaron Glenn. Despite the missed opportunities, Jones believes that Schottenheimer’s experience and track record make him the best fit for the job.

As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season under new leadership, fans will be eager to see how Schottenheimer’s coaching style and offensive strategies will impact the team’s performance on the field. With a strong background in coaching and a family legacy in the NFL, Schottenheimer is poised to lead the Cowboys to success in the seasons to come.
