For the past few days, there has been a buzz surrounding the House Ethics Committee’s jurisdiction over former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. Gaetz recently resigned after being chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the attorney general. The Ethics Committee had been conducting an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use by Gaetz, but their meeting on Friday was canceled, and no report has been released.

House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest, R-Miss., mentioned that once Gaetz resigned to take on his new role, the committee would lose jurisdiction over him, and therefore, no report would be issued. This is a common procedure when it comes to investigations involving former members of Congress. However, there have been instances where reports were released even after a member had left office, as seen with Rep. John Murtha and Rep. Bob Boner in the past.

It is possible for a lawmaker to bring the issue to the House floor using a “question of privileges of the House” to request the release of the Gaetz ethics report. If successful, the Ethics Committee could be compelled to make their findings public. I asked House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., if Democrats were considering this approach, to which he emphasized the bipartisan nature of the Ethics Committee and expressed hope for a bipartisan decision on the matter.
