The report of abuse and abuse says that Canadian sport has lost its way
The future of sport in Canada Commission has released a new national report highlighting the urgent need for better protection of athletes across the country. The report, which was presented by Justice Lise Maisonneuve, reveals deep-rooted issues within the Canadian sports system, ranging from a culture of silence to under-funding and lack of diversity.
During a press conference in Ottawa, Commissioner Maisonneuve emphasized that the Canadian sports system is in crisis and in need of significant reform. The commission, which was established by the federal government in response to athletes speaking out about systemic abuse, conducted extensive research, including visits to various cities and gathering input from over 825 individuals.
The report, which spans over 384 pages, outlines 71 recommendations for change. One key recommendation is the creation of an independent body responsible for overseeing sports and physical activity nationwide. This entity, which could be a crown corporation or a not-for-profit organization established by federal legislation, would provide strategic leadership and coordination for sports in Canada.
The report also addresses jurisdiction issues surrounding the investigation of abuse and misconduct in sports. Currently, the Canadian Center for Ethics in Sport only investigates issues related to national, federally funded programs, leaving lower levels to navigate their own systems. The commission recommends the establishment of a national safe sports authority or tribunal to manage all federal, provincial, and territorial safe sports legislation.
In response to the report, Minister of Sport Carla Qualtrough expressed support for the recommendations, including the need for a formal apology to victims and survivors of abuse in sports. The current State Secretary of Canada for Sport, Adam van Koeverden, also welcomed the report and highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening safety and integrity in sports.
Athletes and witnesses who shared their stories of abuse, intimidation, and discrimination have called for action from the government. Commissioner Maisonneuve emphasized the importance of seizing this opportunity for transformative change in the Canadian sports system.
As Canada looks towards a brighter future for sports, it is essential to address the systemic issues that have plagued the industry. By implementing the recommendations put forth by the future of sport in Canada Commission, the country can create a safer and more inclusive environment for all athletes.
