US Election 2024

The US and Canada conducted military drills in sub-zero temperatures

The U.S. and Canadian air force members recently engaged in joint military exercises in Greenland as part of Operation Noble Defender. This training took place at Pituffick Air Force Base, the northernmost installation of the U.S. military, from Jan. 28 to Feb. 11. The operation aimed to prepare service members for action in extremely cold conditions, with temperatures often dropping below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and reaching as low as -28 degrees.

Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Shemo commended the integrated American and Canadian NORAD teams for their performance in this challenging environment. He emphasized the importance of training in such austere conditions for the defense of both Canada and the United States across all domains. Approximately 100 service members participated in the drills, showcasing their ability to operate at the highest level despite the harsh climate.

These joint military exercises come on the heels of President Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland. In 2019, Trump first mentioned the idea of purchasing the territory, referring to it as a potential “large real estate deal.” He later escalated his calls for the U.S. to take control of Greenland, citing national security concerns.

Despite Trump’s efforts, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen made it clear that Greenland is not for sale. However, she expressed willingness to collaborate with the U.S. to enhance its presence in the Arctic region. Frederiksen acknowledged the growing importance of the High North and the Arctic in terms of defense, security, and deterrence, particularly in light of increased Chinese and Russian activities in the area.

The joint military exercises in Greenland underscore the strategic significance of the region and the need for continued cooperation between the U.S. and its allies. As discussions about the Arctic region evolve, it is crucial for military forces to be prepared for potential challenges and threats in this remote and demanding environment.
