The US is sending a strong contingent of Tour de France-tested riders to the road cycling world championships next month.

The seven-man squad announced on Monday includes Neilson Powless, who currently wears the Tour’s polka dot jersey as the king of the mountains, and Matteo Jorgenson, who nearly won the stage to the finish at the Puy de Dome a day earlier. won.

The Tour had a rest day on Monday and resumed on Tuesday with a hilly stage from Vulcania to Issoire.

Powless and Jorgenson will be joined by fellow Tour riders Lawson Craddock and US road race champion Quinn Simmons, who recently retired from the race after suffering lingering injuries from a crash on stage 5. The other riders on the US team are Magnus Sheffield, Sean Quinn and Brandon McNulty, the reigning US time trial champion.

Sheffield competes in the road race and time trial and McNulty only competes in the time trial, while the rest compete in the road race.

The road world championships are combined with the championships of the other Olympic cycling disciplines, and all take place over a period of 10 days from August 3 in Scotland. The men’s race is scheduled for August 6, starting in Edinburgh and finishing in Glasgow, while the women’s road race begins on August 13 with a start in Balloch and finish in Glasgow.

The women’s time trial is on August 10, the men’s time trial the following day.

The US women are led by Chloe Dygert, who won the US road and time trial titles before finishing on the podium twice in Italy’s nine-stage Giro Donne. The 26-year-old from Indiana won the world time trial title in 2019 before a horrific crash the following year threatened her career with injuries and a lengthy comeback to cycling.

Dygert will be joined in the time trial by Kristen Faulkner and Amber Neben. Dygert will be joined in the road race by Veronica Ewers, Heidi Franz, Megan Jastrab, Coryn Labecki, Skylar Schneider and Lauren Stephens.
