‘These are kids’: Quebec peewee tournament urges spectators not to boo U.S. anthem

The Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, now in its 65th edition, is set to kick off on February 12th in Quebec City. This prestigious event will host thousands of young hockey players aged 11 and 12 from around the world, including about 40 teams from the United States.

However, city officials and organizers of the tournament are urging the public not to boo during the American national anthem at the upcoming games. This request comes in response to recent incidents where boos were heard at Canadian arenas during the American anthem, as spectators expressed their displeasure with American economic policies.

Julie Hamel, the deputy director of the tournament, emphasized that these young players have no ties to politics and should not be subjected to such behavior during what should be a memorable and positive experience for them. She highlighted that participating in the tournament is often a dream come true for these aspiring athletes, and booing during their national anthem could tarnish their experience.

To address this issue, the organizers will issue a special statement during the opening ceremony on February 15th at the Videotron Centre. Patrick Dom, the general manager of the tournament, stressed the importance of being proactive in light of recent events, such as the booing at a Toronto Raptors game. He acknowledged the heightened political climate between the U.S. and Canada but emphasized that 12-year-olds should not be caught up in such tensions.

Both Quebec City Mayor Bruno Marchand and the opposition at city hall have called for respect and understanding from attendees. Mayor Marchand emphasized that it is essential to separate the actions of political figures like Donald Trump from the American people, especially when children are involved in sports events. Opposition leader Claude Villeneuve echoed this sentiment, calling for a warm welcome and respect for all players, regardless of their origins, during the tournament.

As the tournament approaches, organizers and city officials are working to create a welcoming and respectful environment for all participants. By setting a positive tone from the start and encouraging unity and sportsmanship, the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament aims to be a memorable and enjoyable experience for young athletes from across the globe.
