Three guilty in Russian intelligence-linked warehouse fire in London

A recent incident in east London has brought to light a sinister plot orchestrated by Russian intelligence operatives. Three men were convicted of arson in an attack on a warehouse storing equipment bound for Ukraine. The attack, which took place on March 20, 2024, was carried out by agents of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, acting on behalf of Russian military intelligence.

The British government has labeled Wagner as a terrorist organization, highlighting the seriousness of the attack. The perpetrators were recruited by British intermediaries to target an industrial unit in Leyton, east London, where generators and Starlink satellite equipment intended for Ukraine were being stored. These Starlinks are crucial for Ukraine’s military in defending against Russia’s invasion.

The arson attack is part of a larger campaign of disruption across Europe that Western officials attribute to Moscow and its proxies. The fire caused approximately 1 million pounds ($1.35 million) worth of damage, underscoring the destructive nature of the plot.

A jury at London’s Central Criminal Court found three men – Jakeem Rose, Ugnius Asmena, and Nii Mensah – guilty of aggravated arson. However, a fourth man, Paul English, was acquitted. The orchestrators of the attack, Dylan Earl and Jake Reeves, pleaded guilty to aggravated arson on behalf of the Wagner Group before the trial began. They also admitted to offenses under the U.K.’s National Security Act 2023.

The trial also involved two other men, with one being found guilty of failing to disclose information about terrorist acts, while the other was cleared of any involvement. The detailed investigation into this incident sheds light on the lengths to which Russian intelligence will go to disrupt and cause harm in foreign territories.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the broader geopolitical implications of such covert operations. The conviction of the perpetrators sends a strong message that such acts of aggression will not be tolerated on British soil. It is imperative for authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in detecting and preventing similar plots in the future.
