Ticats GM says he has been diagnosed with ‘a serious form of cancer’

Ted Goveia, General Manager of Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Reveals Battle with Cancer

Hamilton Tiger-Cats general manager Ted Goveia recently made a heartbreaking announcement on the club’s website, disclosing that he has been diagnosed with “a serious form of cancer that’s spread.” The 55-year-old Goveia shared that he received the diagnosis in April, although he did not specify the type of cancer he is fighting, sources suggest it is esophageal cancer.

In his statement, Goveia expressed his desire to keep his health condition private until the team had finalized their roster for the upcoming season. He emphasized his gratitude for being able to focus on building the best team possible for 2025 without his health becoming a distraction.

Goveia, a native of Burlington, Ontario, took on the role of general manager for the Tiger-Cats in December 2024, following an 11-year tenure with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. His return to Hamilton was a homecoming of sorts, having played high school football at Assumption Secondary School and later coaching at various local organizations.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Goveia dedicated himself to assembling a strong staff and enhancing the team’s roster, which had fallen short of the CFL playoffs the previous year. He also took the time to familiarize himself with his new colleagues and surroundings.

During an interview in March, Goveia reflected on the significance of his role and the beauty of working close to home in southern Ontario. He expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to lead the Tiger-Cats, acknowledging the stunning views during his commute to the office.

Goveia’s CFL journey began with the Toronto Argonauts in 2010, where he held various coaching and scouting positions before transitioning to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. His success with the Blue Bombers, including two Grey Cup victories in 2019 and 2021, solidified his reputation as a respected figure in Canadian football.

Before joining the CFL, Goveia amassed 15 years of coaching experience in Canadian university football, with stints at Mount Allison, McMaster, and the University of British Columbia.

As Goveia prepares for his battle against cancer, he remains optimistic and determined to overcome this challenge. Despite his absence from the team facilities due to treatment, he remains steadfast in his commitment to the Tiger-Cats and looks forward to rejoining the team once he has conquered his health struggles.

The Tiger-Cats organization, led by Goveia, is confident in their ability to navigate this difficult period and continue their pursuit of success in the CFL.
