As Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy grows and baby boomers retire, increased demand for truck drivers is expected and federal and provincial immigration programs are opening the door for internationally trained drivers to grab it jobs in Canada.

In early June, the Federal Job Bank’s job search and career planning website listed 19 trucking jobs, categorized under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2021 system with the code 73300, on The Rock, as Newfoundland and Labrador is affectionately known.

The vast majority, 78.9 percent or 15 of those available truck jobs in Newfoundland and Labrador were located on the Avalon Peninsula, home to the county seat of St. John’s.

There were three trucking job openings on Job Bank for the West Coast-Northern Peninsula and Labrador region of the province and only one in Notre Dame, Bonavista Bay, and the central region of the province.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the median hourly wage for trucking is $22, but that ranges from a low of $15.00 an hour to $34.38 an hour, Job Bank reveals.

Trucking wages are significantly higher in the county outside of St. John’s, with the hourly wage for truck drivers in Labrador peaking at $40.40.

Based on a standard work week of 37.5 hours, that would be $78,780 at the top end of the annual pay scale for truck drivers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

But truck drivers also often receive a mileage allowance, which allows them to earn considerably more.

With transportation companies desperate for truck drivers to supplement and grow their aging workforce, both the federal and provincial governments have helped with immigration policies to work permits And permanent residence to qualified foreign workers seeking these types of jobs in Canada.

By being Provincial nominees program (PNP), Newfoundland and Labrador allows foreign nationals to apply under the Skilled Worker track with a job offer to work as a truck driver for an eligible employer.

Internationally trained truck drivers who are refugees will also be able to come to Newfoundland and Labrador through the Pilot Economic Mobility Projects (EMPP) from this summer.

That path will help employers hire skilled workers refugees and other displaced persons, including for freight transport.

“Canada is a world leader in helping skilled refugees connect with employers struggling to find workers in critical areas, giving newcomers the chance to restart their careers and lives here in Canada,” said minister of Immigration Sean Fraser earlier this year.

“Our government will continue to develop and scale up innovative immigration measures to help employers address their critical labor shortages and give refugees the chance to live in safety as they rebuild their lives.”

That was welcome news for the transportation industry, whose vacancy rate has more than tripled since 2015 and doubled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. With an average age of 47 still rising, the industry has one of the oldest working populations, with a third of drivers over the age of 55, according to the Canadian Trucking Alliance.

Employers in Newfoundland and Labrador can also hire truck drivers through the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).

It is a pathway to permanent residency for skilled foreign workers and international graduates from Canadian institutions who wish to work and live in any of Canada’s four Atlantic provinces, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Since mid-November last year, foreign nationals who want to emigrate to Newfoundland and Labrador as truck drivers can also submit an application under the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program.

Truck driver was one of 16 professions added to the FSW’s list of eligible professions when the IRCC adopted the NOC 2021 classification system.
