The legislative wheels are already in motion in Congress as Republicans gear up to introduce a series of border security and conservative policy bills for President-elect Donald Trump, just two weeks before his inauguration.

Friday marked the beginning of the 119th Congress, meaning that any bills not signed into law by President Biden must be reintroduced and passed again, even if they had passed one or both chambers in the previous term. Republicans wasted no time in reintroducing several bills that were previously dismissed as mere “messaging” efforts by Democrats and some GOP lawmakers.

Among the bills reintroduced is the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, which aims to require proof of citizenship in the voter registration process. Another bill reintroduced is the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act by Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., which calls for the deportation of migrants who have committed sex crimes.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., announced that the House will be voting on the Laken Riley Act this week, a legislation named after a nursing student who was killed by an illegal immigrant. The bill would mandate federal immigration authorities to issue detainers and take custody of illegal immigrants who commit theft-related crimes.

With Republicans set to control all levers of power in Washington after Trump’s inauguration, GOP lawmakers are determined to push through their agenda. Plans are in motion for a massive conservative policy overhaul bill, which will include elements of border security, energy policy, tax cuts, and defense measures.
