Tiger Woods withdraws from Genesis Invitational after death of mom

Tiger Woods has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational following the passing of his mother, Kultida, at the age of 78. The golf legend shared the heartbreaking news last week, revealing that he is still in the process of coming to terms with the loss of his beloved mother.

In a statement, Woods expressed his gratitude to those who have reached out to offer their support during this challenging time. He explained that while he had initially planned to participate in the tournament, he ultimately realized that he was not emotionally ready to do so.

“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready,” Woods said. “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss. Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”

Woods recently played a round of golf with President Donald Trump before the commander in chief headed to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX. Trump shared his condolences for Woods and his family, praising Kultida Woods for her influence on her son’s success.

“I was just informed that Tiger Woods’ wonderful Mother, Kultida, passed away — She has gone onto greener fairways!” Trump wrote in a post. “Kultida Woods was an amazing influence on Tiger, and gave him much of his strength and brilliance. Melania and I send our love and prayers to Tiger and his incredible family!”

The Genesis Invitational, organized by Woods’ foundation, does not have a cut line. If Woods had participated, it would have marked his first tournament since undergoing a microdiscectomy in September to address leg pain.

This year, the event will be held at Torrey Pines instead of Riviera due to the wildfires that affected the Los Angeles area in January. Despite his absence from the tournament, Woods’ presence and legacy in the world of golf continue to be felt and celebrated.
