Tim Houston appears on Fox to make case against Trump tariffs

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston recently appeared on American cable TV to address the ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada. In an interview on The Claman Countdown, a Fox Business show hosted by Liz Claman, Houston emphasized the importance of resolving the conflict and strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

During the interview, Houston pushed back against President Trump’s assertion that the U.S. can do without Canada. He highlighted the interconnectedness of the two nations, pointing out their shared history, economic ties, and familial connections. Houston expressed disappointment over the imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods, likening it to a betrayal by a close ally.

According to Catherine Klimek, Houston’s press secretary, the premier’s office arranged the TV appearance to communicate directly with the American audience. Klimek stressed the negative impact of the trade war on both countries and the need for a swift resolution.

In contrast to his earlier statements criticizing Trump’s actions, Houston took a more diplomatic approach in the interview, refraining from directly naming the U.S. President. Instead, he focused on the broader issue at hand and the need for collaboration to address shared challenges.

The interview coincided with a meeting involving Ontario Premier Doug Ford, federal officials, and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. When asked about the meeting, Houston urged for the removal of tariffs and emphasized the importance of working together to tackle common threats.

While in New York for the interview, Houston also met with Canadian Ambassador Bob Rae and representatives from companies with a presence in Nova Scotia. The premier’s visit was part of a promotional tour aimed at showcasing the province’s economic potential and fostering international partnerships.

Looking ahead, Houston is scheduled to attend a seafood conference in Boston, where Fisheries Minister Kent Smith will also be present. The delegation from Nova Scotia will be seeking to expand their market reach and reduce dependence on the U.S. market by engaging with international buyers.

Overall, Houston’s efforts to engage with American audiences and promote Nova Scotia’s interests reflect a proactive approach to addressing trade challenges and building strong partnerships in the global marketplace.
