Tom Brady reveals initial reaction to Bill Belichick taking North Carolina job
Tom Brady, the legendary former quarterback of the New England Patriots, recently opened up about his initial reaction upon learning that his former coach, Bill Belichick, had decided to become the next head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Brady shared his thoughts during a Fox broadcast of the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday evening.
In an interview with Fox play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt, Brady expressed his surprise at Belichick’s decision, stating, “Kind of blew me away when I heard the news. I didn’t think that was an opportunity he was looking at. But they’re getting, obviously, a tremendous coach. Being in that locker room with him for many years, those guys are gonna play very hard. He’s gonna coach them well. It’s a great benefit for all those players who are going to that program because they’re getting the best coach the NFL has ever seen – now he’s at a college level.”
When asked about Belichick’s recruiting prospects as a college coach, Brady admitted that his former coach was not known for being warm and fuzzy. Reflecting on a past experience, Brady shared, “He’s not the warmest and fuzziest of all time. I remember one year after we won the Super Bowl in our first year, we got in a limo on Bourbon Street after we beat the Rams in 2001, we got in a limo after the game, the next morning at the MVP press conference he goes, ‘You know what, Tom? You had a pretty good season.’ That was about as warm and fuzzy as it got with coach Belichick.”
Belichick is set to take over as the head coach of the Tar Heels, replacing Mack Brown. The team currently has a record of 6-6 and is set to face UConn in the Fenway Bowl, with Freddie Kitchens serving as the interim coach for the game.
North Carolina has a history of success, having gone to six consecutive bowl games. However, the program has only had one 10-win season since 1998. Belichick’s arrival is expected to bring a new level of expertise and coaching acumen to the team.
As North Carolina prepares for a new era under Belichick’s leadership, fans and players alike are eager to see how the legendary NFL coach will fare in the college ranks. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in college football.
