The Department of Education (DoED) recently made headlines as it announced significant workforce cuts, reducing its staff by nearly half. This move prompted a lawsuit from the attorneys general of 20 Democratic states, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The lawsuit alleges that President Donald Trump does not have the authority to dismantle the department and that these cuts will have a detrimental impact on the educational systems of their states.

The DoED, under the leadership of Secretary Linda McMahon, revealed plans to shrink its workforce from over 4,000 employees to around 2,000. While this decision has sparked controversy, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Communications Madi Biedermann assured that these cuts are strategic and internal-facing, and will not directly impact students and families. Employees working on essential programs such as FAFSA, student loan servicing, and special education services will not be affected.

Secretary McMahon has defended the reductions as a necessary step to eliminate bureaucratic bloat and return education authority to the states, as mandated by President Trump. However, critics like Attorney General James argue that these cuts will deprive students and families of essential services, resources, and funding needed for a quality education.

The lawsuit filed by the Democratic states, including California, New Jersey, and Washington, emphasizes that only Congress has the power to abolish an agency created by legislation. This legal challenge draws parallels to former President Ronald Reagan’s unsuccessful attempts to close the Department of Education.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Secretary McMahon remains steadfast in her belief that education should be controlled by the states and local school boards, providing equal opportunities for all students. The lawsuit and workforce cuts have sparked a heated debate over the role of the federal government in education and the impact on students across the country.
