Top Canada leaders to meet with Trump aids to discuss tariffs

Two top Canadian ministers are set to meet with President-elect Trump at his home in Florida to discuss border security and trade as the inauguration day approaches. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly will be in Palm Beach for talks this week. The purpose of the meeting is to address Canada’s plan to secure the border in order to avoid potential tariffs.

According to Jean-Sébastien Comeau, a spokesperson for LeBlanc, the ministers will also meet with Tom Homan, Trump’s incoming “border czar,” after Christmas to further discuss border security measures and other issues. The goal is to build upon the discussions that took place during the Prime Minister’s previous meeting with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

In addition to border security, the Canadian leaders will focus on combating fentanyl trafficking and addressing the negative impacts of potential tariffs on Canadian goods. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on imports from Canada unless the country takes action to reduce the flow of migrants and fentanyl into the U.S.

The strained relationship between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been evident on social media, with Trump making disparaging remarks about Trudeau. Trump even suggested to Trudeau that if tariffs on Canada would harm its economy, perhaps Canada should become the 51st U.S. state.

The threats of tariffs have caused concern in Canada, as the country is heavily integrated with the U.S. economy. The majority of U.S. crude oil and electricity imports come from Canada, highlighting the importance of the economic relationship between the two countries. Approximately $3.6 billion Canadian worth of goods and services cross the border each day, making Canada the top export destination for many U.S. states.
