Top law firm Sullivan & Cromwell to represent Trump in ongoing legal matters

President Donald Trump has made a strategic move in his ongoing legal battles by retaining counsel from the top law firm Sullivan & Cromwell. This decision comes after his original legal team on the cases joined his administration in key roles. The president will now be represented by a team of experienced attorneys, including Robert J. Giuffra Jr., Matthew Schwartz, Jeffrey Wall, James McDonald, and Morgan Ratner.
Giuffra, who has been with Sullivan & Cromwell since 1989, will lead the legal team. He brings a wealth of experience in securities, white collar criminal, product liability, and tax litigation. Schwartz, Wall, McDonald, and Ratner also have impressive backgrounds and expertise in various areas of law. Boris Epshteyn, Trump’s top legal advisor, will continue to play a crucial role in coordinating legal matters for the president.
Giuffra emphasized the importance of Trump’s appeal, stating that the misuse of criminal law by the Manhattan District Attorney sets a dangerous precedent. The legal team is determined to have the case dismissed on appeal to uphold the rule of law and protect the presidency.
The shift in legal representation comes after Trump appointed his former lawyers to top roles in his administration. Todd Blanche, John Sauer, Emil Bove, and Will Scharf successfully defended the president in investigations related to Jan. 6, 2021, and alleged interference in the 2020 election. Sauer argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on presidential immunity, leading to a ruling in favor of immunity for nonofficial presidential acts.
The new legal team will now handle Trump’s appeals in cases brought against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Trump was recently found guilty of falsifying business records but was sentenced to an unconditional discharge by Judge Juan Merchan, preserving his ability to appeal the conviction.
In James’ case, Trump and defendants were found liable for various charges, including fraud, falsifying business records, and insurance fraud. Trump has appealed the $454 million judgment, which is pending before the New York Appeals Court. Judges on the appeals court have shown openness to the possibility of reversing or reducing the judgment.
Overall, Trump’s decision to retain counsel from Sullivan & Cromwell signals his commitment to vigorously defend himself in these high-stakes legal battles. The experienced team of attorneys will work tirelessly to ensure a favorable outcome for the president.
