Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Wins 2024 Tip O’Neill Award
Toronto Blue Jays’ standout player, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Tip O’Neill award by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. This award is presented annually to a Canadian player who demonstrates exceptional performance on the field while embodying the highest ideals of the sport.
Guerrero, who hails from Montreal and is the son of former MLB star Vladimir Guerrero Sr., showcased his talent by leading Canadian-born major leaguers in various offensive categories during the previous season. His impressive accomplishments included a batting average of .323, 199 hits, 98 runs scored, 30 home runs, and 103 runs batted in.
The 25-year-old slugger faced tough competition for the award, with players like Josh Naylor of the Cleveland Guardians, Cade Smith of the Guardians, and Tyler O’Neill of the Boston Red Sox also being considered. This marks Guerrero’s second time winning the Tip O’Neill award, with his first win coming in 2021.
Notable past winners of the award include Hall of Famer Larry Walker, who has won it nine times, Joey Votto, the 2010 National League MVP, who has won it seven times, and Justin Morneau, the 2006 American League MVP, who has won it three times.
Jeremy Diamond, chair of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s board of directors, praised Guerrero’s exceptional performance, stating, “When you look at his overall numbers, he was not only the best Canadian-born hitter in 2024, but he was one of the elite players in all of Major League Baseball.”
This recognition of Guerrero’s outstanding achievements serves as a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport. The Canadian Press first reported this news on December 5, 2024.
