Toronto Tempo unveiled as handle for new WNBA team
Introducing Toronto Tempo: Canada’s New WNBA Franchise
Canada’s newest WNBA team has officially been named the Toronto Tempo, a moniker that was revealed after a slight leak on the league’s website. Despite the unexpected unveiling, team president Teresa Resch embraced the excitement surrounding the announcement.
The team’s logo features a light-blue basketball with a prominent T, symbolizing motion and speed. The team’s colors will be blue and red, offering a modern twist on a classic Canadian color palette.
Expanding the League
The Toronto Tempo will join the WNBA in 2026, along with the Portland Roses. This expansion will bring the total number of teams in the league to 13, with the addition of the Golden State Valkyries in 2025.
Community Involvement
The team engaged fans across Canada for input on various aspects of the franchise, including the team name, colors, and overall identity. Over 10,000 submissions were received, with “Tempo” emerging as the chosen name after a rigorous selection process.
According to Resch, Tempo signifies control and reflects the unique style of play that Canadians bring to the game of basketball. The name transcends language barriers, working seamlessly in both English and French.
Ownership and Vision
Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by chairman Larry Tanenbaum, will own and operate the Toronto Tempo. Tanenbaum, known for his role in bringing the NBA to Toronto with the Raptors, envisions the WNBA team as a platform to showcase women’s basketball and promote growth in the sport.
The team will primarily play at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, with the option to use the larger Scotiabank Arena for select games. However, the Toronto Tempo aims to play games across Canada to engage fans nationwide.
Growth and Development
Resch, who brings a wealth of experience from her tenure with the Raptors, is poised to lead the Toronto Tempo to success. With a focus on community engagement and player development, the team is set to make a mark in the WNBA.
Stay tuned for more updates on Toronto Tempo as they prepare to make their debut in the WNBA in 2026.
