Toronto WNBA franchise reveals nickname, set to compete in 2026
The WNBA is welcoming the Toronto Tempo as its newest team, with the team’s name and logo unveiled on Thursday. After receiving over 10,000 submissions for the team name, the Toronto Tempo was chosen to represent the energy of the people in Canada.
Teresa Resch, president of the Toronto Tempo, described the name as representing pace, speed, and the heartbeat of the city. The team aims to set its own championship cadence and inspire fans across the country. The logo, featuring forward-leaning motion and dynamic angles, reflects the team’s values and desire for progress.
The six lines in the logo symbolize the five players on the court, with the sixth line representing the fans as the sixth player in the game. Resch emphasized that the name Tempo captures the energy, excitement, and passion fans can expect from the team on and off the court.
The WNBA awarded Toronto an expansion team earlier this year, making the Tempo the league’s 14th team. The team is set to begin playing at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum in 2026. The Golden State Valkyries, the league’s 13th franchise, will kick off their roster selection through an expansion draft, marking the first expansion draft in 16 years.
In addition to the Tempo, Portland was also awarded an expansion team in September, with both teams set to debut in 2026. The WNBA’s expansion reflects the growth and popularity of women’s basketball, with more opportunities for players and fans to engage with the sport.
