‘Trailblazer’ Gail Shea, former federal fisheries minister and MP from P.E.I., dies at 66

Gail Shea, a prominent figure in Canadian politics, passed away at the age of 66. She served as the Conservative MP for Egmont in Prince Edward Island during the Stephen Harper era. The news of her death was confirmed by the P.E.I. Premier’s Office, with Premier Rob Lantz praising her dedication and service to the province.

Shea was a trailblazer in many ways, becoming the first P.E.I. woman to be appointed to the federal cabinet. During her time in office, she held various ministerial positions, including National Revenue and Fisheries and Oceans. She was also responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency at one point.

After losing her seat in the 2015 federal election, Shea attributed her defeat to a campaign of misinformation about the Conservative government’s actions. Despite the challenges she faced, she remained dedicated to serving her constituents and fighting for issues she believed in.

Current Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre paid tribute to Shea, describing her as a dear friend and a larger than life figure in the Conservative movement. Liberal MP Bobby Morrissey also expressed his condolences, highlighting Shea’s unwavering commitment to her roots and values.

Before entering federal politics, Shea had a successful career in provincial politics, serving as the Progressive Conservative MLA for District 27. She was known for her resilience, even in the face of adversity, such as when she had a pie thrown in her face during a protest.

Born in Skinners Pond, P.E.I., Shea was a proud Maritimer who never forgot her humble beginnings. She leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to her community, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
