Transit service and curbside waste collection in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality have been halted for a second day due to a walkout by some unionized workers, according to the municipality.

The CBRM says transit routes and the Handi-Trans service are not operating, and there will also be no waste collection, due to the work stoppage by employees with CUPE Local 759.

The job action, which Mayor Amanda McDougall has called an “illegal walkout,” began Tuesday.

The president of CUPE Local 759, Kevin Ivey, said Tuesday the union executive did not condone the work stoppage.

He said members have been unhappy about jobs being given to non-union workers and CBRM’s policy for accommodating people who can’t perform their regular duties due to health issues.
