Tributes pour in for ‘unforgettable’ Bedford mall Santa

A beloved Dartmouth man known for bringing the magic of Christmas to children year-round is being fondly remembered by his family and the Halifax community for his warmth and generosity.

Felix Perry, affectionately known as Santa Fee, passed away on Sunday at the age of 71 after a courageous battle with cancer. Perry had been a fixture as Santa Claus at Bedford Place Mall for 15 years, spreading joy and holiday cheer to countless families through annual Christmas photos and visits to local schools.

Following his passing, an outpouring of tributes poured in on social media, with many expressing gratitude for the joy Perry had brought to their lives over the years. Wanda Perry-York, one of Perry’s daughters, shared that the family has been comforted by the overwhelming love and support from the community during this difficult time.

Stephanie Murphy, office coordinator for Bedford Place Mall, described Perry as an unforgettable presence who had the ability to make the holiday season truly magical for everyone he encountered. Perry’s dedication to his role as Santa extended beyond the mall, as he volunteered his time for home visits and community events, even amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to his role as Santa Claus, Perry was a man of many talents, including author, poet, pirate, and wizard. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren, whom he adored and cherished.

Perry’s daughter shared that her father’s love for adventure and fearlessness knew no bounds, whether he was riding a motorcycle or skydiving in his 60s. His zest for life and encouragement to pursue one’s dreams will forever be remembered by those who knew him.

As a way to honor Perry’s memory, his son-in-law, Jamie York, plans to carry on his legacy by donning the Santa suit for volunteer events and family gatherings. The family has requested that donations in Perry’s honor be made to the palliative care fund of the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers.

A celebration of Perry’s life is scheduled for Monday, September 1 in Eastern Passage, where friends, family, and members of the community will come together to pay their respects to a man who brought joy and happiness to so many during his time as Santa Fee.
