Trudeau announces Canada-U.S. Economic Summit for Friday

The threat of punishing tariffs on Canadian goods may be on pause for now, but it still looms over the Canadian economy. In response to this uncertainty, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that the government will be hosting a Canada-U.S. Economic Summit later this week. The summit, which will take place in Toronto on Friday, aims to increase investment and ease internal trade barriers.

According to a news release from the Prime Minister’s Office, the event will feature Canadian leaders in trade, business, public policy, and organized labor. Trudeau emphasized the importance of building a long-term prosperity agenda for Canada, one that is resilient, breaks down barriers between provinces and territories, and diversifies global trade.

This announcement comes on the heels of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to delay imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods for at least a month. The decision followed a call between Trump and Trudeau on Monday, just hours before the tariffs were set to take effect. Trump has expressed interest in reaching a “final economic deal” with Canada in the future.

The purpose of Friday’s summit is to explore ways to grow Canada’s economy, facilitate trade within the country, diversify export markets, and boost productivity. Trump has cited security concerns at the northern border as a justification for potential tariffs, including the flow of illegal fentanyl and migration into the U.S.

During their call on Monday, Trudeau proposed an updated border strategy to Trump, highlighting Canada’s $1.3 billion border security plan. This plan includes reinforcing the border with new helicopters, technology, and personnel. Trudeau also committed to three new measures during the call: creating a “fentanyl czar,” listing Mexican cartels as terrorists under Canadian law, and establishing a $200 million intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl.
