Trudeau appoints new senators for Nova Scotia, Nunavut

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the appointment of two new senators on Thursday, with Allister Surette representing Nova Scotia and Nancy Karetak-Lindell representing Nunavut. Both appointees have strong ties to the Liberal Party and extensive experience in electoral politics.

Surette, a former Nova Scotia MLA and cabinet minister, brings a wealth of political experience to his new role. He has also served as the president and vice-chancellor of the Université Sainte-Anne, a French-language university in Church Point, Nova Scotia. His background in academia and government make him a valuable addition to the Senate.

Karetak-Lindell, on the other hand, has a long history of public service and advocacy. She was elected to Parliament in 1997 and played a crucial role in the negotiations that led to the establishment of Nunavut as a separate political entity. Prior to her political career, she was involved in the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada and was honored with membership in the Order of Canada.

Both Surette and Karetak-Lindell will serve as independent senators, appointed based on the recommendation of an independent advisory board. However, their past affiliations with the Liberal Party are notable, as Trudeau’s recent Senate appointments have shown a trend of selecting individuals with ties to the party. In fact, a CBC News analysis revealed that more than half of Trudeau’s recent Senate appointments have had connections to the Liberal Party.

The diverse backgrounds and experiences of Surette and Karetak-Lindell will bring a unique perspective to the Senate and contribute to the ongoing discussions and decision-making processes within the government. Their appointments reflect Trudeau’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in the Senate, as well as his desire to bring a range of perspectives to the table.
