Trudeau expected to meet with King Charles to discuss ‘matters of importance to Canada’

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to meet with King Charles on Monday to discuss matters of significance to Canada and its citizens. This meeting comes amid growing concerns about the silence of King Charles, Canada’s head of state, regarding Donald Trump’s controversial statements about annexing Canada.

During a press conference on Sunday, Trudeau mentioned the upcoming meeting with His Majesty, stating that they would address issues important to Canada and Canadians. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of standing up for Canada’s sovereignty and independence in the face of external threats.

Trump’s repeated suggestions of Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States have raised eyebrows, with many questioning why King Charles has not publicly addressed these remarks. As per a Buckingham Palace spokesperson, the King acts on the advice of the Canadian government in matters concerning the country. Canada operates under a constitutional monarchy, where the monarch plays a symbolic role while the elected government carries out governance.

Trudeau was asked about whether he had urged British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to speak out in support of Canada’s sovereignty. In response, Trudeau expressed confidence in Canada’s allies standing by the country and defending its identity and independence.

During Starmer’s recent visit to the White House, a journalist inquired about King Charles’ reaction to Trump’s annexation threats. Starmer evaded the question, dismissing any notion of a divide between the nations. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly also commented on the matter, stating that the longstanding relationship between Canada and the UK remains strong.

Joly highlighted the importance of caution in dealing with potential threats from the Trump administration, warning European counterparts about the implications of Trump’s actions. She emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures to protect Canada’s interests in the face of external pressures.
