Trudeau to announce Canada’s response to Trump trade war
The North American Trade War of 2025: Canada Strikes Back Against U.S. Tariffs
The year is 2025, and the North American trade war has officially begun. President Donald Trump has imposed punishing 25 per cent tariffs on virtually all Canadian goods, leading to a retaliatory response from Canada. This escalation in tariffs has upended trade relations between the two countries, which were once close partners and friends.
Trump’s tariffs, which apply to everything Canada exports to the U.S., have the potential to cause job losses, economic devastation, higher inflation, and strained relations on both sides of the border. In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has retaliated by imposing tariffs on an initial $30 billion worth of American goods, with plans for $125 billion more in tariffs in the coming weeks.
Trudeau is set to address the nation at 10:30 a.m. ET to outline the government’s strategy for combating Trump’s aggressive trade policies. In a statement released last night, Trudeau hinted at the possibility of implementing non-tariff measures to pressure the U.S. to reconsider its tariffs.
\”Canada will not let this unjustified decision go unanswered,\” Trudeau stated. \”Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and we are exploring additional measures in collaboration with provinces and territories.\”
Provincial leaders have already announced their own countermeasures, including removing American liquor from store shelves, increasing road tolls for American commercial drivers, and restricting U.S. firms from bidding on government contracts. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has even suggested cutting energy exports to the U.S., a move that could impact millions of American customers.
Lana Payne, president of Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector union, has called for a united response to what she describes as a \”full-on trade war.\” She emphasizes the importance of Canadian politicians, businesses, and residents coming together to resist Trump’s trade policies and protect Canadian interests.
As tensions escalate between the two countries, the future of North American trade hangs in the balance. The consequences of this trade war could have far-reaching implications for both the Canadian and American economies, making it imperative for both nations to find a resolution to the ongoing dispute.
