Trump admin halting $510M in funding to Brown University over antisemitism response

Brown University is facing the potential loss of over half a billion dollars in federal funding from the Trump administration due to concerns over the Ivy League school’s response to antisemitism following Hamas’ 2023 attack in Israel. A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that nearly $510 million in federal contracts and grants awarded to Brown University are at risk.
In response to these allegations, Brown Provost Frank Doyle addressed campus leaders in an email, acknowledging the “troubling rumors” surrounding the university’s research funding but stating that they have no concrete evidence to support the claims. Despite this, the Trump administration has taken a firm stance on addressing antisemitism on college campuses, with Columbia University already losing over $400 million in federal funding for failing to ensure the safety of Jewish students.
Harvard University is also under scrutiny, with a federal antisemitism task force launching a review of the institution’s nearly $9 billion in federal grants and contracts. Similarly, Princeton University has confirmed that several of its research grants have been put on hold as part of the ongoing investigation into campus antisemitism.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon has emphasized that schools receiving federal funding have a responsibility to protect all students from discrimination, particularly in light of the rise in antisemitic incidents on university campuses. The Trump administration has pledged to take a more aggressive stance in combating antisemitism and holding universities accountable for their handling of such incidents.
In addition to funding cuts, the administration has also targeted foreign students involved in anti-Israel protests, with the Department of Homeland Security deporting an assistant professor at Brown University for her support of Hezbollah and attendance at the funeral of a slain Hezbollah leader. The move underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing antisemitism and ensuring the safety of all students on college campuses.
Brown University made headlines last year for its handling of anti-Israel protests on campus, including a controversial deal with protesters regarding divestment from companies linked to Israel. Despite the challenges, the university has stood firm in upholding its values and commitments to academic freedom and diversity.
As the investigation into campus antisemitism continues, universities across the country are being urged to prioritize the safety and well-being of all students and uphold their responsibilities as recipients of federal funding. The Trump administration’s efforts to combat antisemitism on college campuses serve as a reminder of the importance of promoting tolerance and inclusivity in higher education institutions.
