Trump admin to update lawmakers on George Soros probe in closed-door meeting

House Republicans are set to receive an update on the Trump administration’s investigation into billionaire George Soros’ influence on local radio during a closed-door lunch hosted by the Republican Study Committee (RSC). The RSC, led by Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, is inviting Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr to brief GOP lawmakers on the FCC’s probe into Soros and his investment firm’s purchase of over 200 Audacy radio stations across the country.

The FCC, under the previous Biden administration, facilitated a deal that allowed Soros’ investment firm to acquire 40% of Audacy’s debt, making it the largest stakeholder in the radio company. This move has raised concerns among Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., who have called for closer scrutiny of the transaction.

During the lunch meeting, Carr and Republicans are expected to discuss strategies for pushing back against media outlets perceived as biased against the GOP. This meeting comes as part of the RSC’s role as the largest group of lawmakers within the House GOP, serving as an informal think tank for the party and hosting various speakers to address key issues.

In addition to the discussion on Soros’ influence on local radio, Carr is also expected to address the broader issue of media bias and potential regulatory actions the FCC could take. The FCC commissioner has previously expressed interest in reevaluating the petition for reconsideration related to Soros during an interview last year.

This meeting underscores the ongoing debate within the Republican Party regarding media influence and the need for transparency in media ownership. As the investigation into Soros’ involvement in Audacy continues, House Republicans are seeking to ensure that the FCC remains vigilant in protecting the integrity of the airwaves.
