Trump administration ends second TPS protection for Venezuelans

The Department of Homeland Security and Secretary Kristi Noem are making significant changes to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelan nationals in the United States. This decision, which was communicated to Fox News Digital, involves the termination of the 2021 TPS designation for Venezuela.

During President Biden’s administration, two TPS designations were established for Venezuela. The first designation, implemented in 2021, is now being terminated. The second designation, established in 2023, was terminated by the Trump administration on April 7, 2023.

According to a DHS spokesperson, the decision to end TPS for Venezuelan nationals is based on considerations such as public safety, national security, migration factors, immigration policy, economic concerns, and foreign policy. The termination of the 2021 TPS designation will impact 268,156 Venezuelan nationals currently residing in the U.S. They will lose their protected status and will no longer be allowed to stay legally in the country.

Furthermore, USCIS data reveals that 3,738 pending initial TPS applications and 102,935 pending renewal applications will be terminated as well. USCIS recommends individuals no longer covered by TPS to utilize the CBP Home Mobile App to facilitate their departure from the U.S.

The termination of the 2021 TPS designation is set to expire on September 10, 2025, with the termination becoming effective 60 days after the Federal Register notice is published. Following the termination of the 2023 TPS designation in April, approximately 348,000 Venezuelan nationals were required to make arrangements to leave the U.S.

In related news, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) found that some Venezuelan officials may be facilitating migration for members of the violent Aragua train gang from Venezuela to the U.S. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused the U.S. of seeking regime change through military threats.
