Trump AG pick Pam Bondi clears Judiciary, will get confirmation vote in Senate

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday voted to approve Pam Bondi’s nomination for U.S. attorney general, clearing the way for a full Senate vote later this week. Bondi, a former Florida attorney general, received the support of all 12 Republicans on the committee, while all 10 Democrats voted against her.

Bondi is known for her tough stance on drug trafficking, violent crime, and pill mills in Florida. With 18 years of experience as a prosecutor, including serving in the Hillsborough County state attorney’s office, she is seen as well-equipped to take on the role of the top U.S. attorney.

Her nomination has garnered praise from over 110 former senior Justice Department officials, as well as Democratic and Republican state attorneys general, who commend her experience and bipartisan approach. Bondi emphasized during her confirmation hearing her commitment to a justice system free from partisanship.

Despite the political turmoil surrounding the transition to a new administration, Bondi remained composed during her confirmation hearing. Democrats raised concerns about President Donald Trump’s recent actions, such as firing inspectors general and freezing DOJ hiring, and questioned Bondi’s ability to navigate a potentially challenging political landscape.

If confirmed, Bondi is expected to bring her successful track record from Florida to the national stage, focusing on combating drug trafficking, illicit fentanyl use, and human trafficking. Former colleagues believe she will prioritize policy over politics and tackle important issues like border security and anti-Semitism.

Dave Aronberg, a Democrat who previously ran against Bondi for Florida attorney general, expressed confidence in her ability to stand up to political pressure and do what is right for the country. He highlighted her past accomplishments in Florida and expressed hope that she will bring the same determination to her new role at the Justice Department.
